Anticoagulation Clinic

The KVCH Anticoagulation Clinics helps patients on blood thinners such as Coumadin® manage their medication more effectively. Now patients can obtain lab results in 15 - 30 seconds with a simple finger-stick. After the nurse tests the blood, a member of our medical staff will review the results with you, adjust your dose, if needed, and answer any questions about your medication.

What should I expect during my visit?

The nurse will take several droplets of your blood by finger-stick. This allows our medical staff to make any necessary adjustments in medication.

Patient education is an important part of the visit. We encourage you to ask any questions that you have about your blood thinner. By working together, we can help you to use your medication effectively and safely.

If you are new to Coumadin®, you will generally need to visit weekly. If your results are within an acceptable range, testing is usually done once every four weeks - more often, if the medication level in your blood is too high or too low and needs to be adjusted. Copies of lab tests will be sent to your physician. If a serious concern is detected, he or she will be notified immediately.
